The iPhone 4 (aka iPhone 4G) has been officially announced and to launch on June 24 for a price of $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB and will be available in black or white. The new iPhone 4 measures only 9.3mm in thickness, about 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS. It comes with a glass front and black. It has a steel band that goes around it which also doubles up as an antenna system for the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4 still packs the old GSM/UMTS radio. The previously rumored features are matched, which are it has a front-facing camera and a camera at the back and the display boasts a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels, which is about 4X increase in pixels compared to previous model. The new display of the iPhone 4 has been defined as Retina Display by Apple, is rated at 326 dpi, claimed to be beyond the human eye’s limit of distinction. It’s similar to the iPad, is an IPS display but also remains 3.5 inches.
The iPhone 4 is powered by the A4 processor and the battery is slightly larger that is rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video and 40 hours of music. The WiFi is now wireless N (802.11 n). The camera is now a 5-megapixel with 5x digital zoom and a “backside illuminated sensor” and capable of recoding video in HD 720p at 30fps.
iPhone 4 runs IOS 4: The iPhone 4 now runs the new OS, which is called IOS 4 instead of OS 4. The IOS 4 allows the developers to get their apps compatible with the new display with higher resolution. Developers also get access to gyroscope and by using the CORE Motion API, they can have six axis motion control between the gyroscope, compass and accelerometer.
There is an iMovie app for the users to play around with the HD video but this app won’t come for free and it costs you $4.99. Bing has been added to the IOS 4, so now you have three search engines, Google, Yahoo and Bing, and you’ll be able to switch to Bing as default.
The IOS 4 also gets the FaceTime video chat, which allows you to flip the image between the front and rear cameras and between landscape and portrait modes. However, the video calling can be made via WiFi only at the moment. For video call over 3G, Apple still needs to work with carriers to support it.
So, June 24 is the date when the iPhone 4 starts selling. AT&T lets you have an upgrade up to 6 months early, which means if your contract expires at any point in 2010, you’ll be eligible to get an upgrade to iPhone 4 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $299 as long as you stick to the same carrier for another two years.
