SIMFI, a product of the partnership between Telefonica and Sagem Orga, which is a special SIM card that comes with an embedded WiFi modem. And it can replace the regular SIM card used on your mobile phone to provide WiFi 3G/HSPA Internet access to WiFi-enabled devices such as notebooks, netbooks etc.
Amazingly, with just the size of a SIM card, the SIMFI has a WLAN modem built in. It can be used on any type of classic phone to replace the regular SIM card. It’s just like turning your cellphone into a 3G WiFi router that allows other WiFi-enabled devices (netbooks, notebooks etc) to connect to it for Internet access.
Now with the SIMFI, you can use your cellphone as a WiFi 3G router. And it doesn’t require USB or PCMCIA modem, the SIMFi card lets users avoid “complex 3G modem and driver set-ups”.
Since a mobile phone is the most ubiquitous gadget for almost everyone these days. And with the SIMFI, you can easily setup a WiFi hotspot to share within your small group of friends, while you’re on the go. Which eliminates the hassle of having to carry around another gadget, simply for sharing Internet access e.g. the MiFi router.
Currently, there is no information about the pricing and availability of the SIMFI. However, Telefonica is expected to commercialize the SIMFI soon, hopefully by end of 2010.
