One of the good news from Apple is they’ve lifted the restrictions against 3G VOIP calls from the iPhone SDK. This allows any future release of VOIP apps to be able to make use of 3G to make VOIP calls.
Due to the previous restrictions on the iPhone SDK, all the VOIP apps such as Skype could only make VOIP calls via WiFi. But now with the restrictions removed, the future versions of the VOIP programs will be able to make use of 3G network, which is more convenient for the users as 3G Internet connection is widely available through your cellular provider, making it easier for you to make free VOIP calls while you’re on the run.
Since the newly announced iPad also comes with 3G support and has a built-in mic and speaker, it should be able to take full advantage of the VOIP over 3G as well. The very first application that allows VOIP calls over 3G on the Apple iPhone is the iCall. There should be more updates of VOIP apps for the Apple gadgets, to come with the support of VOIP over 3G in the near future.
