Cell-CT, a 3D cell microscope detects cancer cells effectively

cell-ct-3d-cell-scanning-microscopeScientists from University of Washington have helped researchers at VisionGate, a Seattle, WA company, to have developed a new kind of 3D microscope, Cell-CT, which is able to detect cancerous cells more effectively.

The Cell CT 3D microscope is able to visualize cancer cells in three dimensions, which shall bring great progress in early cancer cell detection in human body.

The Cell-CT uses visible light instead of X-ray to scan individual cells from all angles, which works pretty similarly to a CT scanner – In a CT scanner, a patient immobile while the X-ray machine rotates, whereas with the Cell-CT, each cell is embedded in a special gel inside a glass tube which then rotates in front of a fixed camera for taking many pictures per rotation.

The device also employs proprietary software, which is able to reconstruct volumetric structures within cells, such as choromosomes which can be used as markers for detecting cancer or other conditions. Take a look at the video below, which shows the 3D image captured using the Cell-CT.
