Android powered handset will be the next one that hackers are eyeing on after the iPhone. They will try to find all possible ways to jailbreak it. Especially, the recently released T-Mobile G1, it will be the main target to get it jailbroken.
Since Android is an open source OS, and many would wanna try out 3rd party software apps on it. But ironically, it doesn’t allow 3rd party software to access its file system. In order to install the third party applications on Android handset, you have to jailbreak it, similar to what has been done on the iPhone.
After jailbreaking a device, its file system will be free from lock-down, and you can then install the 3rd party applications on it. The XDA developers have found a way to jailbreak the Android OS.
And of course, the T-Mobile G1 will mostly be the first handset to be jailbroken, as it’s the first Android-powered handset in the market. The jailbreak allows developers to gain root access to the Android file system. The steps to jailbreak Android are as follows:
1. Turn on WiFi
2. Get PTerminal from the Android Market
3. Fire up PTerminal
4. Type “cd system” and hit Enter
5. Type “cd bin” and hit Enter
6. Type “telnetd” and hit Enter
7. Type “netstat” and hit Enter
8. This will display your device’s IP address
9. Now you can telnet into your device’s root using the IP address you just wrote down
I guess Google will work pretty hard to get an Android update to be released pretty soon, which should protect the Android from this jailbreak method.
