Bundle protocol via IP (Internet protocol) network, allows quicker transfer of satellite-captured info to the Earth

Bundle protocol allows satellites to transfer information via IP network more effectively to the Earth
Researchers have found a way to transmit information collected by a satellite to the ground more quickly and effectively, i.e. by the use of bundle protocol to transmit the information via IP (Internet protocol) system.

This is made possible by the use of bundle protocol, which has been used on UK-DMC satellite that was built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). The UK-DMC satellite is the member of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC),which is used for observing any major disasters and also monitoring commercial land.

There are actually four of these DMC satellites used daily orbiting the Earth, sending back mission-critical imagery to ground stations via IP networking. And these satellites cause a minor disruption in interacting with terrestrial networks.

The use of proactive bundle fragmentation, protects against the disruption and link outage that is always caused by two different satellites that pass over the ground station. SSTL also employs the high-performance Saratoga protocol, to enable the bundles to be transferred quickly and effectively with no disruption to the ground.

The research done using the bundle protocol is scheduled to be presented on Sept 30th, at the 59th International Astronautical Congress 2008 in Glasgow, where SSTL will be present for their exhibition as well.
