One of the great features of iPhone is its visual voicemail which lets you view a handy list of the voice mail, and select only those you wanna listen to. This handiness perhaps will get you build the bad habit of leaving lots of those voicemails on the iPhone without bothering to delete them.
Of course, you’ll wanna transfer some of these precious voice mails to somewhere for better storage, in order to free some space on your iPhone. Transferring to your computer is a neat idea, which you can then review any one of them anytime you like. Two simple ways have been suggested here how you can transfer the voicemail audio files on your iPhone to your computer.
The first method is to use SFTP to transfer the files onto your computer’s hard drive, provided you have jailbroken your iPhone, so you can SFTP into it. The second method, is to use your computer’s line-in port and a free recording software and record those messages manually, which needs the iPhone to be intact, not jailbroken. Each method is listed with step-by-step instruction as follows:
The File Transfer Method
1. Provided your iPhone 2.0 has been jailbroken, you can then install an OpenSSH server on the iPhone, which then lets you transfer the audio files onto your computer.
2. Get the IP address of your iPhone, by going to Settings->Wi-Fi on your iPhone, and view the details of the network connection that you’ve joined.
3. Fire up any FTP client that supports SFTP, such as CoreFTP lite. Connect to the iPhone’s IP address with root’s username and the password. Make sure the box SFTP/SSH is ticked (e.g CoreFTP lite) for an SFTP connection instead of plain FTP.
4. Once you’re connected, browse to the directory /private/var/mobile/Library/Voicemail/, where you can get a list of the Voicemail files, which are saved as .AMR files that you can then grab and transfer to your computer. These files can be played using QuickTime later to listen again those precious voice mails.
The Manual Record
This method only works if your iPhone is still a virgin. Which you can make use of the iPhone’s headphone jack and the computer’s line-in port. Connect an audio line and open up a recording software, such as Audacity. Play the voicemail and record it using Audacity.
I believe the first SFTP method is much quicker, as you can just grab and queue all the required audio files for download, and go for a nap. Whereas the second method needs you play the voicemails one by one and record each of them, which is kind of time consuming and constantly needs your attention. So jailbreak your iPhone now just for the sake of quicker transfer of those precious voice mails.
