It’s the first one that we’ve heard today, an SSD that has double of the storage sizes of those 128GB SSDs that we have blogged about before. It’s a 256GB solid state drive which has just been announced by Samsung.
The Samsung’s 256GB MLC-flash-based SSD drive features a SATA II interface, has a sequential read speed of 200Mbps and sequential write speed of 160Mbps. So, it’s the SSD with the largest capacity that we’ve encountered so far.
The 2.5-inch of the drive will only be available in September. And the 1.8-inch version will be due in Q4.
This 2.5-inch SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical hard disk drive. And it’s only 9.5mm, which is less than 1cm in thickness and measures only 100.3×69.85 mm.
SSDs have no moving parts, provide much better efficiency in terms of speed and energy usage than hard disk drives. But SSDs have been far behind in terms of storage capacity than HDDs. But with the newly released Samsung’s 256GB MLC-based SSD drive, the two are a step closer. It’ll probably take another few years or less then we won’t get to see any hard disk drives used in computers and gadgets.
