1Seg TV broadcast in Japan is getting increasingly popular these days. Every one gets to enjoy watching mobile TV on their handsets in Japan. But too bad is most mobile phones have poor battery life. And there is always an interruption while watching for a continuous and long broadcast, due to the handset is running out of battery.
Now, Sony has just prototyped an Ultra small Hybrid Fuel Cell, which is small enough to fit in one hand and can be used for mobile devices to provide much longer battery life. Sony also makes use of this fuel cell and has developed a prototype of a practical fuel cell system which consists of the fuel cell itself, a secondary circuit battery and some control circuits.
This fuel cell system takes methanol as the fuel and there is a little pump to control the supply of the fuel. The system is super efficient, needs very little fuel, which is about 10mL of methanol, to let you continuously watch 1Seg movie on your mobile phone for up to 14 hours.
The fuel cell system is a hybrid type which the output is supplemented by a Li-polymer secondary battery. With the secondary battery, it’ll have stabilizing function that can deal with steeply rising peak powers of mobile phones. The instantaneous output of this fuel cell system can be as high as 3W.
The size of the entire fuel cell system measures about 50 × 30mm only, including the the fuel cell, the secondary battery and some control circuits. For the fuel cells, Sony has also announced that they’ve evaluated a fullerene-type solid polymer electrolyte membrane and MEA (membrane-electrode assembly) developed with the membrane. And with all this, it’s expected that the company will get this fuel cell system materialized and commercialized soon.
