Apple patents iPhone clam shell design? an iPhone nano?

Whether this is official or just a rumor, Apple seems to have plan to patent a new clamshell design for its iPhone. The new clamshell design of iPhone combines the current multi-touch screen capabilities with flip phone carrying handiness.

The patent is dubbed as a “dual sided trackpad”, which allows the multi touch interface to be useable on from both sides of the screen, making it active no matter the iPhone clamshell is in its closed or open position. Besides, the clamshell design also gives three screen functionality and better interactions to the users. The mock-up is shown in the picture above.

To convert the iPhone into a clamshell design definitely will sacrifice the wide screen that most users are used to. Especially the comfortable experience of watching movie or writing documents on the wide screen of iPhone, will be gone with the new clamshell design. So, the new clam shell design is not seen as a good replacement of the class iPhone. It’s likely that Apple would be maintaining two versions of iPhone, which is the classic and the new clamshell. The new clam shell design might be good for those wanna having music playing and making calls at the same time.

Some are also speculating that the new clamshell design would bring another version of iPhone, iPhone nano that would be released just in time for Christmas. Similar to iPod having grandchildren such as iPod nano and shuffle.
