Google Docs' competitor, Zoho Writer makes use Google Gears to go offline!I was once pretty hot about Google Gears, having plenty of ideas for developing applications that have ability to go offline using Google Gears. But due to busyness or any other kind of other excuses, what a shame that no much result that I have shown to you guys here.

Anyway, forget about my own exploration on Google Gears. Lets look at some solid applications that have adopted the power of Google Gears. TechCrunch has just reported that, one of the pretty hot contestants for online office application suites, Zoho, has incorporated Google Gears to allow its office suite to have the capability of going offline. Meaning that it allows you to access its apps and data even though your computer is not connected to the Internet.

Just a recap about Google Gears. It’s a plugin that works both for Internet Explorer v6 and higher and Firefox v1.5 and higher, which caters for three things, ability for web application to go off line, local database, and a better threading pool.

Zoho has incorporated the offline functionality to its Zoho Writer and the rest of the apps , such as spreadsheet, presentation will follow shortly. The Zoho Writer now offers read-only offline functionality, which read-write offline functionality will appear in 3-4 weeks time.

Zoho office suite has remained a strong competitor to Google Docs and Spreadsheets. It sounds pretty ironic that they have to rely on Google’s software to add the offline functionality onto their apps.
