But Linux is still my preferred server platform. And now if you’re also a big fan of Linux and you wish to get your iPhone to run the Linux OS, it’s now been made possible by the iPhone Dev Team.

The iPhone Dev Team member, planetbeing has reverse engineered the Apple’s hardware drivers, making it possible to run Linux OS on the iPhone. And it can be controlled with a USB keyboard running off the iPhone’s <strike>multiple</strike> multi-purpose port.

The Linux kernel 2.6 has been ported over to Apple’s iPhone platform. It can be run on the first, second generation of iPhones as well as the first generation of iPod Touch. This is still a very early port over of the Linux OS to iPhone which has only very minimal features. It’s still lacking lots of drives but at least it offers an alternative choice of OS you can run on jailbroken iPhone.

The Linux port on iPhone currently supports the framebuffer driver, serial driver, serial over USB driver, interrupts, MMU, clock etc. And the dev team is working on porting more over including NAND memory, wireless networking, touchscreen drivers, sound, accelerometer, and the most important is the baseband chip, which makes the iPhone communicate with the cellular networks.

Go to Ulteo.com, and fill up some simple profile information then you’ll get an account to login and start using the OpenOffice online. The online OpenOffice by Ulteo requires Sun’s original JVM (Java Virtual Machine), different from some other online office suites such as Google Docs or Zoho, which rely on DHTML/AJAX for delivering fantastic web apps with high user interactiveness.

Although I’ve been a big fan of Java language, doing couple of development of applications on the server-side Java, but I don’t really appreciate much for the kind of desktop Java apps that involve heavy loading of the Java GUI UI. The online OpenOffice launched by Ulteo.com is an Applet web app, which takes pretty long time to download some of the UI components and consumes pretty much memory. Imagine, the OpenOffice requires extremely rich UI and definitely this takes some time to load.

The Ulteo’s online OpenOffice works similarly to Google Docs/Spreadsheet and Zoho, which allows you to create, store, share your office documents online, and you can get it printed in PDF format. You’re given with 1GB free storage and you can create various OpenOffice documents online including Writer, Impress, Calc, Draw, Math and Base.

Anyway, I’ve had several attempts to use the Ulteo’s online OpenOffice, but none of them was a success. I encountered a few problems such as failing to start session and server busy. The two screen shots on top are what I got from Ulteo’s development section. According to the Ulteo page, shown above that its server is getting a big rush that would load extremely slow. Maybe I could only try it some days later when it gets less <strike>busier</strike> busy.

It runs on Linux, a small device that is capable of many functions. Including playing music and movie, recording audio, tuning FM radio, reading e-books, making IP calls and browsing the Internet. It seems to work similarly to MojoPac that we’ve seen before which allows you carry your personal desktop around and transfer to any computer to work on. Just plug it into a PC’s, it’ll then present you your own desktop and environment.

Its browser is Web 2.0 complaint, meaning that you shouldn’t have any problem browsing AJAX-featured or flash featured websites. It’s also loaded with mail client, RSS reader and Open standard office suite, which uses the ODF standard file format, so you can use word, spreadsheet, presentation software on it. The 4GB model is available at a price of $290.00.

Besides Google, there are some other small players doing it too. A six-person startup, Bug Lab is doing a modular computer system that resembles a set of electronic Legos. The system and the modules will run open source operating system, Linux. The system is called “Bug”, which it starts off from a BugBase brain module.

The BugBase brain module is equipped with an ARM1136JF-S CPU and 128MB of RAM. Additional features include built-in WiFi, a rechargeable battery, USB, Ethernet, and a mini LCD with button controls. The unit measures 5 x 2.5 x 0.6 inches says Bug Labs, and is about the weight of an iPhone. Each BugBase brain can expand with up to four BugModules. Bug Lab’s move hopes to attract more developers and form a community into developing hardware and software modules for its product. This would be the future trend that consumer electronics will become community electronics.

Instead, it is an operating system based on open source, which the real intention behind is to make the mobile world to have cheaper phone calls, and much easier web browsing. This new mobile OS to be released by Google, will be under Google’s relaxed terms of an open-source license. So, other developers can view the source code and develop better apps to sit on it! Of course, this Google’s mobile OS will eventually be on all mobile platforms and it’s now been endorsed by 33 companies who make up the new Open Handset Alliance including many big players.

The Google mobile OS is expected to be available in the second half of 2008 from four major manufacturers in the alliance: Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC. Whether you like it or not, there is NO gPhone. It’s a software, an open sourced operating system for the mobile world that makes calls cheaper and net surfing much easier! And it’s totally open for its source that allows apps freely developed for it and it’s open to freely work with any mobile network eventually!

Yes, it will definitely be something by Google. But before the actual announcement, lets look at some rumors that have been floating over the last weekend until today. The rumors cite more to Google would release a software more than a hardware. Last week some said that Google would release a Linux-based operating system that would have the code name “Android” instead of “G-Phone”.

USA Today said that it would be a Linux-based OS with added Java topping. They claimed that it’s an operating system instead of a hardware with some partners are ready in the line including Sprint, Motorola, Samsung and even Japanese giant wireless giant NTT DoCoMo. Furthermore, a weird mention about “The Google Phone, powered by the new G-system, could blow open this model by providing easy access to the Internet at PC-type speeds…”. The bottom line is Google is gearing towards something with an open OS, open network and financed by ads! The actual answer can only be known later today!

And again rumors have emerged that Google is planning on revealing its first Google mobile OS in about two weeks’ time.

The rumored Google OS would probably include all the available Google’s core apps including Gmail, Google Calender, and Google Maps. The Google OS would be an open source OS that would attract more outside developments for better applications for it. HTC and LG are also said to be in talks to develop hardware for the mobile OS to run on their devices.

As every single PC is associated with an IP address that is the identity of your PC, so you can’t run away from being fully logged by the local ISP or your office IT department for the websites that you’ve accessed. If you want a little privacy without getting traced by your local ISP or your office IT department, Goldens.com has a solution that may help, but it costs a little every month.

What Goldens.com does for you is after you’ve signed up and downloaded and installed its OpenVPN client, your PC’s outgoing and incoming data will then be encrypted by Goldens’s VPN channel. Meaning that when you’re surfing the Internet, the data or information being sent to and from your PC to the Internet will be sent through a secure channel established between your PC and Goldens.com’s server in Amsterdam. Doing so will deceive the whole world that you’re surfing from a computer seated in Amsterdam. So, your local ISP will NOT have any trace that you’re surfing porns or chatting on your PC at home. Goldens claims that the encryption technology used in their VPN channel is the “strong” 2048 public key cryptographic algorithms based on Open source software, which should be strong enough not letting you be caught of any nasty tasks over the Internet. But, I wonder if Goldens will get the big shit if some hackers make use of this VPN channel to bombard other websites or servers. I bet Goldens would have some restrictions for some outgoing services such as blocking some DDOS attacks?

This extra service from Goldens protects your Internet roaming privacy, costs you $11 per month or $99 if you pay yearly. It all depends how much you value your privacy and the choice is yours whether to sign up for it or not!

With many thousands of web 2.0 software and applications have mushroomed over the Internet in recent years, Intel has decided to take one step ahead, and created a bookmarking site similar to KillerStartups.com or SimpleSpark.com, which allows public to submit and vote on new up-and-coming applications or companies. This bookmarking website is called Cool Software, which will be the central repository for Intel to predict who is the next Google, before it becomes Google, so their always ready investing arm, Intel Capital, can hit the jackpot at the most right time.

Cool Software site was first operated by Intel internally only before opening it to public on the 8th. The site at first grew internally where Intel employees from different departments across the globe contributing their favorite software finds, and eventually the decision was to open it to the public.

Lets see what the public will do for Intel’s Cool Software. Hopefully, they won’t leave Intel with full of spam. Worth mentioning is the site is built based on open-source Pligg project but has some proprietary modifications, of course some controls and filtering that Intel has injected. And the most important is the big name behind is Intel, which we could expect only serious apps to be submitted to the site and perhaps more venturing into building more cool apps in order to attract Intel’s attention.

" align="left" />When the rumors started rumbling about Google was working on a cellphone that would probably be the biggest rival of iPhone, everybody was simply so eager and started waiting for the official and final words from Google to confirm the Google Phone was real. But, what has been reported by New York Times would have probably shattered many people’s dreams.

According to NYT, Google wanna have its footprint everywhere to leverage the mobile phone’s advertising potential. In short, Google is not creating a device to be the rival of the iPhone. Instead, Google is working on a software, an OS for the mobile world that will be an alternative to Windows Mobile from Microsoft and other OSes. And this Google mobile OS will be made free and available as an open source software. The move of Google is purely to lead the creation of an open source OS for the mobile world to compete with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. So, Google is still on its own track, which the right track for them is to work on software instead of hardware.

But, think deeper, even though Google is working on an OS, it still needs some kind of device to run the OS and the Google-packaged software. Would Google seek a partner to build the device or they’ll talk to phone manufacturers to offer free with their OS? Perhaps, we would get to see some Nokia phones, PDAs like HTC, Dopod and O2 to be loaded with Google OS and software packages in the near future.

The eBay edition of Firefox provides functionalities such as an eBay sidebar for real-time tickering of items status update (such as bidded items, items added in watch list or items just uploaded for bidding), status alerts, outbid notices, integrated eBay search and built-in support for eBay’s Account Guard.

Other than the eBay edition, they’ve also got an add-on for existing Firefox users. Both the eBay edition and the add-on work for European eBay sites including UK, France and Germany. If you’ve been a bidder or a seller on eBay, this eBay edition of Firefox will be pretty useful to keep you receiving instant update from eBay. So, you could always stay ahead for taking any action against bid than anyone who don’t have it. The eBay edition can be downloaded here.

This simply tells me that the Java’s kind of syntax such as strong typing, inheritance, endless lines of coding and those hassle dealing with Object Oriented stuff are simply out of date, which failed to meet the productivity of today’s fast growing need. As a platform, Java is still robust, no doubt there are tons of frameworks and platform were built using Java. But due to the complexity of its syntax and those millions lines of coding to make up a pretty small app but with rich content, it will not remain as a choice for developer. So, the answer by Sun Microsystem to the Java language is JavaFX, its new baby. JavaFX is the scripting variant of Java, which is said to have much simpler syntax that allows much more rapid productivity for developing content and media rich applications to meet today’s requirement! Of course, JavaFX will not lose those advantages that have been well established by Java, such as Write Once, Run Anywhere.

JavaFX basically contains two major components, they are the JavaFX Mobile and the JavaFX scripting. Simply by its name, you’ll know that JavaFX mobile is meant for mobile developers to develope applications for mobile devices, but it is available via OEM license to carriers, handset manufacturers and others seeking a branded relationship with consumers.

The JavaFX script will be the answer to simpler-syntax scripting for developing content and media rich applications (Rich media and highly interactive content) that include set-top boxes, mobile, desktop and enterprise web applications. JavaFX script is claimed to fit any size or complexity of GUI. In rich content web app development, JavaFX will be the strong competitor to AJAX and the Microsoft’s SilverLight. Furthermore, Sun has declared that JavaFX to be opensource. It looks like JavaFX has created lots of buzz over the blogosphere, as it’s successfully secured the 6th position in the top searches of Technorati, as shown in the screen below.

As a long-time Java developer both for the GUI and web applications, I should get myself prepared for next move in Java, i.e picking up JavaFX. Although I’ve trained myself even up to the stage that I can code Java by simply using a Notepad without the need of using any features-rich Java IDE, JavaFX will be my next move in order to meet today’s demand. My learning progress and experimented work will be posted on my other less-active blog, AjaxApp.com.

I was a trainer giving quite a number of training on those open source and web app development based on open source technolgy before I started devoting my time into blogging. I got a group of students, who are currently working on quite a number of web app development projects and they’ve requested many times that they’d like me to have another blog that include tips and tutorial on web app development, which shall include the topics such as PHP, Java, MySQL, Apache and Linux etc.

Other than TechChee, I did start another development blog earlier on, which is supposed to be under a sub-domain of TechChee, i.e dev.TechChee.com. Due to my overly busy schedule, this blog didn’t get frequently updated. In order to fulfill this overdue request, I’ve decided not to continue on the development blog, but to include two more categories on TechChee here, they are “Web Development” and also “Opensource Tips”. In such a case, it’ll be less taxing and very much easier for the maintainance for me, who is handling this blog single-handedly both for the posts and design. This decision shouldn’t be too much affecting the current theme of TechChee, which still makes it topics center around “technology” and “gadgets”. The main topics of TechChee still remain the same, i.e shop online and gadgets. The posts for these two new categories will only be in the ratio of one out of five of those gadgetry posts as usual. Which means, if I post about 5-6 posts about gadgetry a day, then, perhaps, I’ll write one post either in the category of web development or opensource tips. So, TechChee’s readers, hope you won’t get too surprised if you’re seeing posts about more technical stuff such as programming and web development in the coming blog posts. The topics that will be covered under the two new categories, “web development” and “opensource”, will be as follows:

1. Linux or General opensource stuff

2. PHP

3. Java

4. AJAX/DHTML/JavaScript

5. Apache

6. MySQL

7. Oracle or more to be decided later.

There will be no sub-categories for the time being to differentiate further which of the above for any posts that fall under the two new categories. I’ll only tag them to differentiate it.

Web development,PHP,MySQL,Apache,Linux,Java,Programming,Ajax
