This brain simulator was developed by IBM’s Almaden research center. It consists of 1.6 billion virtual neurons connected by 9 trillion synapses, which is almost a cell-by-cell simulation of the human visual cortex.

With all the massive components, over 150,000 gigabytes of memory and power consumption of over million watts, the simulator is only as good as a cat’s brain. But the achievement is much better than the smaller rat brain simulator that they made two years ago.

To simulate the entire human cortex, they need computing power that is 1,000 times faster than what they currently have managed, but this could only be achieved in about a decade from now.

In order to be free from tangling wires that you hate most, the only way is to go wireless.

Here comes the world’s first wireless USB external hard drive that has been launched by Imation. Called the Imation Pro WX, the hard drive can be remotely and wirelessly connected to your computer. The Imation Pro WX features a little antenna, which works as the transmitter that transmits the data wirelessly at 15MB/s to your computer, while the computer has a receiver connected to the USB port.

Besides the wireless USB connectivity, the storage capacity of this external hard drive is also worth mentioning. It offers a 1.5TB of storage which is sufficient for storing up to 300,000 photos and up to 750 hours of video. The little down side is the 15MB/s is far slower than a NAS transferring over WiFi. Consider a wireless N connectivity which could go up to top speed of 18+MB/s or more theoretically.

The Imation Pro WX wireless USB HDD costs $500. If the price matters but you insist to go wireless, you could also convert one of your existing external USB HDDs into wireless by connecting to it to the Winstar M4, which allows you to access the content via WiFi.

Of course these devices must have built-in wireless connectivity in order to let the users to do shoot and upload on the run.

Cisco has responded by promising the next generation of its Flip video, the Flip MinoHD to come with built-in WiFi connectivity which allows the users to take videos and then directly upload videos to YouTube. Of course with built-in WiFi only allows users manage to get hooked onto WiFi network to upload videos. But this is a lot easier than doing it on the previous models.

Perhaps Cisco should think of equipping the future models with 3G or WiMax to provide more options of connectivity. Besides WiFi support, other feature that the Flip MinoHD will get is a larger screen that will slide open to reveal menu buttons.

The HD 5970 clams two 5800 series chipsets on one card to provide the best performance.

Each GPU has the equivalent speed of a 5850 with a 725MHz primary clock speed, and also clams 1GHz GDDR5 memory, the 3,200 stream (effects) processors, 160 texture units and the 2GB of memory provides it as much performance as two 5850s but takes only half the space.

The HD 5970 also features CrossFire mode, allows two 5970 cards combined together delivering a processing power of equivalent to 4 GPUs for games that support it. The 5970 graphics card was made based on the newer 40nm manufacturing process, allows it to consume relatively low power.

Features such as DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.2 remain intact, and has been added with support for Eyefinity with three displays and OpenCL computing for platforms that support them. The 5970 has two dual-link DVI ports and one DisplayPort output.

The 5970 cards are most ready for highly demanding HD games, and available now from third parties such as Asus, Diamond and MSI. Each runs you about $599.
The video below shows how a wrecking ball was used to test and hit the walls with the wallpaper. With the X-Flex on the backside, the ball could not bring the walls down. Without the wallpaper, the walls crumbled on the first hit.

The Samsung GO 3G can be considered an improved version of the Samsung GO N310 that was shown in July and gets relaunched now with the Windows 7 OS.

The GO 3G netbook is stuffed with an Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 160GB HDD and 1GB RAM. It has a 10.1 inch LED-backlit and scratch-resistant display and housed in a rubberized casing. Here comes the Fujitsu F-04B, which is different from conventional slider phones as it can be separated into two parts.

The Fujitsu F-04B measures 11.4×5.1×20.4 cm and weights about 173g and it boasts impressively long standby and talk time, which are 600 hours and 330 minutes respectively.

This Fujitsu smart phone splits into two parts, which the first part contains most of the electronics and is where the 3.4-inch 480×960 touchscreen display is. The second part is the QWERTY and a slider device with numeric keypad. This obviously provides more space to grip and type on the QWERTY.

The two split pieces are able to connect to each other via Bluetooth and the Bluetooth capability allows them to stay apart up to 10 meters. And interestingly, you can make separate calls using the split pieces and each of them has their own built-in speaker and mic.

Other goodies include HSDPA, a 12.2 megapixel camera, a connector for a Felica smart card, which allows it to be used as an electronic purse payment. It’ll be available in Japan in March/April next year but no word for the pricing.

The new device that has just been announced by Intel today, and Intel simply named it Reader instead of other more high-tech name.

The Intel Reader comes equipped with a camera and is capable of automatic translation of printed text into digital form, which can then be read on screen or spoken aloud. The device can be used to archive printed texts and also useful for the blind or poor-sighted to read without needing to use Braille.

The system has a basic display for navigating and reading text and it’s based on Intel Atom. It can read DAISY-formatted books, MP3 and WAV files and even those that haven’t been created by the Reader itself. It’s equipped with full and mini USB ports for easy transfer of contents to computers.

The eSecure app lets the iPhone/iPod Touch sync and receive real-time updates from the Protection One security panels.

Protection One security panels allow you to have various detections such as gas leakages or any possible intrusion to sensitive areas in your home. Now these security panels are able to send text alerts to an iPhone with the eSecure app installed, once something suspicious detected.

The eSecure iPhone app also allows you to control your home security system remotely. Such as checking if it’s properly armed and disarm it to let cleaning clews in while you’re at work. Read more in the press release below.

LAWRENCE, Kan., Nov. 10, 2009 – Protection One, Inc. (Nasdaq: PONE), one of the nation’s leading providers of security systems to homes and businesses, has developed an iPhone™ application that allows users to access their security panels and receive real-time security updates from their iPhone or iPod Touch®.

With the eSecure application from Protection One, users can confirm that their security system is armed while on vacation or turn off the alarm while at work to let in cleaning crews or other contractors. When armed, the eSecure system will send text or e-mail messages when motion is detected, a particular door is opened, in the event of a flood, if high carbon-monoxide levels are recorded and even when a liquor, medicine cabinet, safe or other sensitive area is accessed.

This technology is designed to offer peace of mind to users whenever they are outside of the home or business via real-time wireless access. Protection One is the first national provider of monitored security to offer this application.

“No one wants to spend a vacation or business trip worrying about leaving the garage door open or if the security alarm is set,” says Protection One President and CEO Richard Ginsburg. “This application puts security at your fingertips and keeps you connected, even when you’re away.”

The application maintains safety and security with multiple layers of password protection. A standard Protection One keypad code is required for access to the eSecure keypad, which is neither stored on the device nor visible to anyone looking at the screen.

The eSecure iPhone application, which is free with the eSecure service subscription and available for download now from Protection One at the iPhone Apps Store, is compatible with all iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Working in tandem with a Protection One security system, the iPhone application is customizable to deliver peace of mind every time you leave the home or office.

The ZiiLABS’ ZMS-08 is a system on a single chip that borrows a couple of features of its predecessor including 1080p playback, 24fps encoding, and HD video conferencing via simultaneous 720p encoding and decoding. And it offers more such as OpenGL ES 2.0 support, integrated HDMI controller, X-Fi audio and Flash acceleration.

The ZMS-08 media accelerator chip is paired with an 1GHz ARM® Cortex™ processor, which runs on custom Android and Plaszma OS and allows low-power but high-performance media-rich processing on low-power mobile devices such as web tablets, netbooks, connected TVs, video conferencing system and home media hubs.

ZiiLABS has signed up with a number of clients and is expecting the first shipments to be in Q1 of 2010. The following diagram shows the architecture diagram of the chip.

An assistant professor of electrical engineering of University of California’s NanoSystems Institute, Aydogan Ozcan, has designed a cellphone microscope that allows you to screen diseases on the run.

The assistant professor only spent a mere $10 for some parts, plus a software he wrote to enable a cellphone to magnify like a microscope. There are no lens and mechanical scanning involved, the magnification solely depends on the software, LEDs, holograms and electronics.

This method of integrating a microscope into the cellphone is simply low in cost, and some more it does not sacrifice any portability. Ozcan’s cellphone microphone is easy to use, allows future system based on this design to diagnose or research better than a traditional microscope.

First among the USB flash drives, having clung the USB 3.0 standard is the Super Talent USB 3.0 flash drive and promises transfer rates of up to 320MB/sec.

The Super Talent USB 3.0 flash drive is expected to be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. And of course you will need to have a computer that comes with the USB 3.0 ports to enjoy the high speeds of up to 200MB/sec. If you want the top speed 320MB/sec on USB 3.0 port, you need a separate UAS Protocol driver to achieve that.

The drive can also work on USB 2.0 port but operates at slower speeds. Anyway, no word for the price and release date.
