These are equivalent to copying contents of a 2Tb drive in around an hour only.

The Pliant SSD is claimed to be used for unlimited daily writes for at least five years without slow down. The magic behind is the Pliant’s products use serial-attached SCSI (SAS) interface instead of the usual fiber channel interface used in most enterprise SSDs.

The company is currently making two models of these super high-speed SSDs, which are the 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch versions. The 2.5-inch version delivers slower speeds of up to 420MB/sec for read and 220MB/sec for write. The drives are now available for companies to purchase but the product has not yet been tested independently, leaving uncertainty with the accuracy of those speeds claimed.

The Fusion ioDrive, a high-end solid state drive which is specially designed for the enterprise that could be used as a replacement for many high-end data storage solutions such as SAN, RAID etc.

Since the Fusion ioDrive is SSD-based, it has more advantages than the platter-based hard drives such as super fast access time and throughput that standard hard disk drives can’t meet at all. The ioDrive is unlike normal hard disk drive which it’s a PCI-e card that occupies a PCI-E slot on the mobo of your server or computer.

The little downside of the current version of ioDrive is it needs driver, so you can’t boot on it. But it will become bootable in Q4, when the company plans to release a new firmware, which allows it to appear as a normal drive in the BIOS, so you will be able to use it as boot disk.

The SSD-based ioDrive still costs pretty expensive to be an end-user product ($2,400 for 80GB). But for the enterprise, its price is lower than implementing SAN/RAID solutions that need multiple hard disk drives which have lower performance. Furthermore, it involves less mechanical parts which shall have longer life span compared to platter-based hard drives.

The need for more solid online applications. Now Google is gonna integrate its online office suite (Google Docs, Google Spreadsheet etc) with SalesForce’s online CRM (Customer Relationship Management) app.

Having SalesForce’s CRM integrated with the Google office suite definitely makes the SalesForce CRM a killer app. Now you will have a better usability on SalesForce’s CRM with various Google apps integrated with it including email, word processing and spreadsheet programs etc. For example, collaborating with customers using the CRM app via email can be kept track within the customer’s sales record. And collaborating in group is now possible by using Google Talk or IM. Furthermore, you could make use of Google Docs or Google Spreadsheet to give you all the flexibility to draft a free-format quotation for your customers on the fly within the CRM app.

The two team up is to target Microsoft’s CRM software , which is integrated with Microsoft’s own office suite. But the difference is Microsoft’s CRM and office suite will need you to install them on your computer, whereas the apps of Google and SalesForce, need you only to work online.

We’ll be getting more and more online applications as the Internet speed is getting faster. Online apps are simply handy as once you’re hooked up to the Internet, you could then start working on it. And store your documents online and it’ll be accessible anytime you get to hook up with an Internet-connected computer. This is particularly useful for those who’re always on the go, which forgetting your laptop or portable hard drive or flash drive is not a big issue now.

The newly integrated online application of Google and SalesForce.com is now called Salesforce for Google Apps, and the app will be made for Salesforce customers at no additional cost starting today.

To provide good cooling system definitely involves pretty huge cost for paying electricity bills to support coolers. Now, a new Silicon Valley startup called International Data Security (IDS) has a much better approach of cooling servers in the data center i.e. making use of natural resources, which they have ships floating in the sea carrying your servers and make use of sea water to keep your servers perfectly cooled!

IDS has unveiled their plan of setting up a fleet of data-serving cargo ships, which these ships will come equipped with SAN (Storage Area Network), NAS (Network Attached Storage) facilities and also with amenities such as private offices, overnight accommodations, and galley services.

IDS has some good ideas of saving money in their plan, such as they plan to buy decommissioned ships and refurbish them from that on. Besides, using sea water for cooling servers will save at least 30% from their total energy consumption.

The floating data centers will also come with good backup gen set, which they have their own built-in generator set for additional power. During disasters, the generators without consuming the fuel of the ships, providing nearly a month of continuous operation.

A piece of PCIe card that was deemed to replace SAN storage for the enterprise use. Now, there is a price tag with this super fast storage card.

A <strike style="color:red;">640GB</strike> 80GB flash-based version of this card will cost you for only about $2,400. Which is definitely much cheaper for investing in complete SAN solution and other multi-disk array storage boxes.

The firm says that the ioDrive PCIe card will be available in Q1 this year (2008). The firm claims that the card leverages solid state technology that is far ahead of any other companies in the solid state market today.

The card offers ram-like speed that is over thousand times faster than hard drive, has much lower power consumption as less mechanical parts and gives similar performance to multi-rack disk array.

Specification:

- 700 MB/s read speed
- 600 MB/s write speed
- 87,500 IOPS (8K packets) transaction rate
- Sustain 3.2 GBps bandwidth with only four ioDrives
- 100,000 IOPS (4K packets) with a single ioDrive
- PCI-Express x4 Interface

Note: We’ve made a correction here. According to the rep of FusionIO, it’s the 80GB version (instead of 640GB) of the ioDrive that costs $2,400, and they’ll be rolling out the 640GB version soon.

Or at least it’s something we need to know here in order to catch up with the rapid change. The card as shown in the picture is a NAND flash PCI Express card that offers up 640 gigabytes of storage and with the speed as fast as a DRAM that is many thousand times faster than your disk drive.

This piece of PCI Express card is called ioDrive, which could be used within the enterprise to replace SAN. It doesn’t need any RAID controller and has the benefit of no moving parts that would consume less power. The best use would be within servers meant for applications that involve heavy processing, intensive I/O tasks or apps need more virtual machines per server.

Transaction rates definitely will increase a lot, by 25 times as NAND is more directly attached to the heart of the computer. The company even claimed that this technology is 200 times better than Ultra SCSI, SAS, 2 GBPS FC (Fiber Channel) and Solid State Disks for sustained data rates and 8K random reads. You’ll get to see this technology in HP’s BladeSystems as the two have formed a strategic alliance. Pricing is around $30 per gigabyte retail and this is definitely a much more economical one compared to any SCSI or SAN solution etc. Comparison chart provided by Fusion-io after the jump.

iBackup, the online backup that offers numerous great features and ease of use, has just announced the support for the backup of Oracle server databases. The Oracle database backup supported by iBackup is only available for Oracle on Windows. iBackup lets you backup Oracle server databases that include versions 9i and 10g. One of the great feature is iBackup allows you to backup the Oracle database without having to interrupt the running Oracle database services.

To use iBackup for your Oracle database, you just need to download the Advanced Backup Plug-In after installing the iBackup for Windows. This wizard will guide you through the backup of your Oracle database. Which it includes features such as taking care of your Oracle authentication, backing up data without interrupting the services, reporting of backup progress, handling security by HTTPS secured data transmission and ease of backup scheduling etc. Other than this, the plugin wizard also provides you ease of restoration, which it handles well for Oracle database authentication, complete and incomplete recovery methods, handling data transmission securely over HTTPs, providing detailed report and logs of backup progress. Too bad is iBackup for Oracle is only available for Windows. I really wish to see its future Linux and Oracle XE support, as my company has just migrated most of our Oracle database servers from Windows to the Linux platform.

This simply tells me that the Java’s kind of syntax such as strong typing, inheritance, endless lines of coding and those hassle dealing with Object Oriented stuff are simply out of date, which failed to meet the productivity of today’s fast growing need. As a platform, Java is still robust, no doubt there are tons of frameworks and platform were built using Java. But due to the complexity of its syntax and those millions lines of coding to make up a pretty small app but with rich content, it will not remain as a choice for developer. So, the answer by Sun Microsystem to the Java language is JavaFX, its new baby. JavaFX is the scripting variant of Java, which is said to have much simpler syntax that allows much more rapid productivity for developing content and media rich applications to meet today’s requirement! Of course, JavaFX will not lose those advantages that have been well established by Java, such as Write Once, Run Anywhere.

JavaFX basically contains two major components, they are the JavaFX Mobile and the JavaFX scripting. Simply by its name, you’ll know that JavaFX mobile is meant for mobile developers to develope applications for mobile devices, but it is available via OEM license to carriers, handset manufacturers and others seeking a branded relationship with consumers.

The JavaFX script will be the answer to simpler-syntax scripting for developing content and media rich applications (Rich media and highly interactive content) that include set-top boxes, mobile, desktop and enterprise web applications. JavaFX script is claimed to fit any size or complexity of GUI. In rich content web app development, JavaFX will be the strong competitor to AJAX and the Microsoft’s SilverLight. Furthermore, Sun has declared that JavaFX to be opensource. It looks like JavaFX has created lots of buzz over the blogosphere, as it’s successfully secured the 6th position in the top searches of Technorati, as shown in the screen below.

As a long-time Java developer both for the GUI and web applications, I should get myself prepared for next move in Java, i.e picking up JavaFX. Although I’ve trained myself even up to the stage that I can code Java by simply using a Notepad without the need of using any features-rich Java IDE, JavaFX will be my next move in order to meet today’s demand. My learning progress and experimented work will be posted on my other less-active blog, AjaxApp.com.

The Apex Content is one of Salesforce’s efforts of integrating Internet web 2.0 technology into its enterprise software solution. Apex Content basically allows the building of applications around unstructured documents, such as office documents, emails, video/pictures and HTML to be integrated to other Salesforce applications, such as its well-known CRM.

Apex Content is built with all the web 2.0 features in mind. Such as one of its components, ContentExchange, which allows users to organize documents by tags and share them within the enterprise. Other than tagging, users can also rate, comment on documents and they’ll get automated files recommendation based on the document’s meta data. There are also different channels of RSS feeds, which users can subscribe based on tag, authors etc.

Since it’s with web 2.0 in mind, then Ajax shouldn’t be out of the picture. Its interface is Ajax-based, but is considered relatively plain. The Ajax interface consists of tabs for managing your requested workflow tasks, searching files, contributing content, managing subscriptions, running reports, and viewing dashboards. Other web 2.0 effect that can be seen on the interface are tag cloud, mouse over preview that shows the meta data of the files. The technology behind Apex Content was originally developed by Koral Technologies, which Salesforce acquired in March 2007.
