Ionic cooling for computer chip is 250% more effective

August 16th, 2007 by ketyung

Ionic cooling for computer chip gives 250% effectivenessIt seems to be a new kind of cooling method for your computers, going to hit the industry instead of the water cooling method that we’ve seen before. The new cooling method is ionic cooling, which was developed by researchers over at Purdue University. And it’s claimed to be 250% more effective. The method consists of a “wind engine”, which needs high voltage for generating positively charged ions and then these ions are spread by wind toward a negatively charged wire. If this “wind engine” is attached at one end of a computer chip and the wire is at the other end, the ions will effectively sluice across the chip and keep airflow clean and constant.

The research seems to have proven the effectiveness of this cooling process. But they are still having lots of work ahead, which is to miniaturize the “wind engine” in order to be attachable to a computer chip. It’s still at a very early stage to talk about when this new way of cooling will hit the industry. Which most likely will take them at least another three years.

New Transformer, Optimus Prime transforms into a PC case

August 4th, 2007 by ketyung

Optimus Primce Transformer PC case
The Transformer movie is simply too hot. Look at the afterwave of what the movie has left for us. Now, even your PC case is the new member of the Transformers. I’d say this is simply cool.

The PC case transform into a 6-foot tall Optimus Prime Robot A mod made by a 36 year old John Magus, a transforming Optimus Prime PC case. This PC case can be transformed to fit your work desk and also back to its original role, a 6 foot 10 inch tall Optimus Prime robot clone.

All the hardware components are sitting in the Optimus’s translucent chest and accompanied by couple of illuminating LEDs. There are some secret compartments at the back of its legs, where you can slot in your keyboard, mouse and any other accessories, to hide them up, when it’s in the form of an 6-foot Optimus Prime robot. The total weight of this Transformer/PC case is 125lbs. It has taken Mr Magus a total of over 300 hours of workmanship to get it done.

World’s first water cooling system for your hard drive!

July 30th, 2007 by ketyung

NEC and Hitachi - world first water cooling system for your hard drive!
Water cooling system is commonly seen in vehicles, but seems to be pretty rare or have never been used for cooling computer peripherals. Hitachi and NEC are now working to produce, what is claimed to be the first world’s first water cooling system for your hard drive. This cooling system has the advantage that it produces pretty low noise, which is lower than 25db. This is definitely suitable to be used in audiovisual machines that need minimized noise level. Anyway, NEC will also make this special cooling system available for its desktop PC in the near future. I hope those ducts and container used to transport and store the water are durable enough that no leaking is possible, even after being used for couple of years.

No hands? Let your feet control the mouse!

July 23rd, 2007 by ketyung

Foot-controlled mouse!
For some unknown reasons that you get tired of using your hands and fingers to control the mouse, then simply past this not-so-complex task down to your feet and toes. The gadget shown in the picture is the kind of mouse controlled by your feet instead of your hands. The little slipper-like mouse on the right side is meant for you to insert your right foot in it, so you can move it. Whereas the foot-pedal on the left with couple of yellow and red buttons are those programmable short-cut keys. Geeks like us who always sit in front of the computer, for sure are lacking some kind of exercise for the feet. The foot-controlled mouse is the right gadget to give your feet some exercise. Of course, you’ll need to have at least few weeks of practice in order to have the same productivity that you gain from your hands. For a price tag of $199, I’d rather stick to my hand.

Samsung sizes up its notebook computer, a 19-inch Desknote announced!

July 18th, 2007 by ketyung

Samsung Desknote Sens G25 for graphic intensive work but not for young chick!
We need the kind of USB computers or much more lighter and portable notebook computer, such as UMPC, for the ease of transporting while traveling. But it seems to be Samsung is doing the opposite, sizing up its notebook computer instead of sizing it down. They have just launched a new notebook PC in Korea, which its screen size is 19 inch. The 19-inch notebook computer is called Desknote ‘Sens G25′. Samsung’s got the point here, the 19 -inch Desknote is a kind of notebook PC designed for using on the desk, which could be an alternative of a desktop PC. Although a 12-inch or 14-inch laptop or an UMPC is very much easier for transportation. But it always gives some kind of frustration of having to work on the limited screen size of such a laptop. Especially frustrating while working on graphic-intensive stuff or work that need bigger screen to have a better viewing for better productivity.

Researchers managed to cram 500GB onto regular DVD or Blu-ray discs!

July 6th, 2007 by ketyung

Researchers managed to cram 500GB onto regular DVD or Blu-ray discs!
Optical disc that provides 500GB of storage capacity? This doesn’t sound too much ahead and even less than some of the holographic technologies that we’ve seen before. But the great thing is the researchers are confident to cram the 500GB onto regular HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs. The project is called “Microholas”, carried out by researchers at University of Berlin, which is some kind of microholographic recording technique that makes use of extremely tiny structures – nanostructures, inside the disc to squeeze in as much data as possible. Anyway, the researchers are still unsatisfied with their current result, which they’re still striking to work on for better, hope to achieve one terabyte of storage on a single disc one day. One terabyte on a single DVD or Blu-ray, that is a lot! So, you can have one single disc to store up thousands of movies on it. My guess is, when this technology has become mature, we’d get the kind of DVD/Blu-ray disc writer in the market, which supports microholographic recording technique in order to write 500GB or more of data onto a single HD-DVD/Blu-ray disc.
