Samsung sizes up its notebook computer, a 19-inch Desknote announced!

July 18th, 2007 by ketyung

Samsung Desknote Sens G25 for graphic intensive work but not for young chick!
We need the kind of USB computers or much more lighter and portable notebook computer, such as UMPC, for the ease of transporting while traveling. But it seems to be Samsung is doing the opposite, sizing up its notebook computer instead of sizing it down. They have just launched a new notebook PC in Korea, which its screen size is 19 inch. The 19-inch notebook computer is called Desknote ‘Sens G25′. Samsung’s got the point here, the 19 -inch Desknote is a kind of notebook PC designed for using on the desk, which could be an alternative of a desktop PC. Although a 12-inch or 14-inch laptop or an UMPC is very much easier for transportation. But it always gives some kind of frustration of having to work on the limited screen size of such a laptop. Especially frustrating while working on graphic-intensive stuff or work that need bigger screen to have a better viewing for better productivity.

Researchers managed to cram 500GB onto regular DVD or Blu-ray discs!

July 6th, 2007 by ketyung

Researchers managed to cram 500GB onto regular DVD or Blu-ray discs!
Optical disc that provides 500GB of storage capacity? This doesn’t sound too much ahead and even less than some of the holographic technologies that we’ve seen before. But the great thing is the researchers are confident to cram the 500GB onto regular HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs. The project is called “Microholas”, carried out by researchers at University of Berlin, which is some kind of microholographic recording technique that makes use of extremely tiny structures – nanostructures, inside the disc to squeeze in as much data as possible. Anyway, the researchers are still unsatisfied with their current result, which they’re still striking to work on for better, hope to achieve one terabyte of storage on a single disc one day. One terabyte on a single DVD or Blu-ray, that is a lot! So, you can have one single disc to store up thousands of movies on it. My guess is, when this technology has become mature, we’d get the kind of DVD/Blu-ray disc writer in the market, which supports microholographic recording technique in order to write 500GB or more of data onto a single HD-DVD/Blu-ray disc.

100 times faster laser hard drive

July 2nd, 2007 by ketyung

100 times faster laser hard driveThere has always been a high demand for faster hard drive. Although we’ve been getting RAM with high capacity. But due to the increased complexity of our software applications, no matter how much RAM that you have on your computers, you’d still be hearing the kind of annoying hard disk data swapping noise – the pretty long moment that almost all your application windows freeze.

Thanks to researchers at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, who have found pretty promising technology to give us very high speed hard drive. And it’ll be 100 times faster than the existing that we can get in the market currently. To achieve 100 times faster, what it uses is laser light to write data to magnetic hard drive at very high speed. Instead of the conventional technology that uses magnets to write and read data. The technique works because photons transmitted by laser carry angular momentum, so they can interact with the hard drive. When each laser pulse heats a tiny space on the disk, so it will change its polarity – thereby storing a bit of data a little easier. Reversing the polarity of the laser pulses can produce equivalent of a 0 or a 1 of binary code on the disk storage medium.

“Intel Connects” cables boost high performance computing

June 27th, 2007 by ketyung

Intel has found a way to boost high performance computing. They’ve just announced that some new cables that they’ve designed which can boost the performance of clustered systems. These new cables are called “Intel Connects“, when used together with its Intel Cluster ready solution, it will very much simplify the integration of various components in a clustered environment. The “Intel Connects” cables will work with Inifiband and 10GbE-based systems that promise a high speed of 20Gbps over a distance of 100 meters. Other than the speed, these cables are also much more manageable than any other cables in terms of its lightweight, size etc. It weighs 84% lighter, 83% smaller and having a bend radius that is 40% smaller. There is no word about its availability.

Seagate finally announces 1 Tera-byte hard disk

June 25th, 2007 by ketyung

Seagate 1TB Barracuda Hard DriveThe few that work aggressively in hard disk drive technology are Samsung, Hitachi and Seagate. Samsung is the one that we know to have produced the 1TB hard disk that they claimed to be very much ahead of the two, as it works on three platters only. Whereas the two, Hitachi and Seagate need five and four platters for their 1TB drive respectively.

Yesterday, Seagate just announced that they’ll be shipping in volume for their 1TB Barracuda drive during the third quarter for $399 only. And they claimed that their technology that works on 4 platters for the 1TB drive allows them for mass production. According to Seagate, Hitachi’s five-platter 1TB hard drive is an old technology and Samsung’s three-platter gives low production yield, which mass production is not possible for the time being. Seagate’s 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 drive is capable of 105MB/s sustained transfer rate, which is the highest ever. The drive also has low power rating of 8 watts at idle and acoustics as low as 2.7 Bels, hardly for the human ear to pick up, an average seek times of 8.5 ms and 32MB cache. There will also be one version for the enterprise, which the power consumption is 20% less, one version optimized for surveillance market and another one drive for the PVR market.

The conclusion is Seagate is pretty confident that they’ll finally be ahead of the two, to become the first in shipping the most 1TB drives by September, despite Hitachi announced their 1TB very early ahead of them and Samsung’s claim to have better technology. So, lets keep an eye on this.

Sanyo grabs the “world’s brightest projector” title for its new models, PLC-XF47 and PLC-XP100L

June 20th, 2007 by ketyung

Sanyo's world brightest projector PLC-XF47 and PLC-XP100L
Sanyo seems to be pretty aggressive in improving their projector product line. We’ve seen the extremely short focus projector from Sanyo before. And now they’ve just introduced to us two new models, which managed to grab the title of “world’s brightest projector”. The two new model are the Sanyo PLC-XF47 and PLC-XP100L. To be more precise, the 15,000 lumen PLC-XF47 should be crowned with the title of “world’s highest light output”, while the 6500 lumen PLC-XP100L should hold the “brightest portable LCD projector” title.

The PLC-XF47 is equipped with four 330-watt lamps, which is capable of wireless HD streaming, 2000:1 contrast ratio, and projecting 720p and 1080i video up to 100 feet away with less than a millisecond of latency and 1024 x 768 resolution. The PLC-XP100L uses a 330-watt lamp, a 10bit video circuit. This unit has an Active Maintenance Filter System that provides air flow control and automatic cleaning when necessary. This unit is capable of a 1024×768 resolution, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and a throw distance of 31 to 400-inches. Both models are loaded with the software PJ-NET Organizer Plus C and the PJ-NET Master Ver. 2.0, which are controllable remotely. For the price, the PLC-XP100L is only a third of the price of PLC-XF47. The PLC-XF47 will cost $30,000 and will be out around in October. The PCL-XP100L will be out in September for only $10,000.

Sanyo’s LP-XL50 projector gives you big image with a really short focus

June 14th, 2007 by ketyung

Sanyo, LP-XL50 projector gives you big image with a really short focus
Sanyo’s newly announced projector, LP-XL50 gives the kind of distinction being able to project an 80 inch, 2,000 lumens image but needing only a really short focus, which is only 8cm away to achieve that. This is extremely good when used in a small room, which you can have the projector stay very close to the screen that can also give a pretty clear and large enough image for the presentation.

As shown in the picture, the projector just hung on the wall and it could give a pretty large image projection on the wall screen that was only about 8 centimeters away from it. I think we have all experienced that when a projector is located too far from the screen, it’ll be a bit inconvenient for the presenter, as most of the time, the presenter will walk right into the projector beam, somehow will block part of the projected image. Having the Sanyo LP-XL50, that little inconvinience can be eliminated. The LP-XL50 uses an ultra-short focal lens, coupled with a new propriety optical engine. Additionally, there’s a a pair of VGA inputs, component, S-Video, and composite connectors, and a built-in two-watt speaker. It’d likely cost touching $5K and be available in December.
