The poison pill system allows the owner to send the laptop into a state that stops working completely. And when the laptop is returned to the owner, there is a need for a pass phrase to get the laptop back to working state. For the thief, who does not have the pass phrase, they will not be able to get the laptop running, and they’ll be completely out of access to the data on the laptop.
