SimpleSpark - a catalog for web applications
Since the term “web 2.0″ started getting hot a few years ago, there have been tons of the web 2.0 or 3.0 applications or portals mushroomed over the Internet. I’ve been deeply fascinated with all these web 2.0 or 3.0 kind of applications. Of course, the common ones such as Digg, del.icio.us, Flickr etc are always in my mind. But, to discover any new and useful one is not an easy task, which couple of hours a day needed to explore websites, forums and blogs etc. I think SimpleSpark, a web portal that serves as a catalog for web applications, has really done a good job.

WeFi makes locating free WiFi hotspot much easier

June 18th, 2007 by ketyung

WeFi makes locating free WiFi hotspot easier
WeFi seems to be pretty useful web service for those living in the countries that are full of WiFi free hotspot services. It provides a client software that is downloadable from its website, which you can install on your Windows OS, to easily locate the free WiFi hotspot for you. The WeFi client software will replace your Windows connection manager, which it displays a map that consists of the available hotspot areas and also the other WeFi users. The map will also be regularly updated automatically upon new discovery of hotspot or new users connecting to WiFi. The mapping function is initially generated by users. Users are encouraged to mark down any possible hotspot on the map. And the WeFi client will make use of any known hotspots that it sees to determine if the user-marked spot is really having WiFi service without the need to be connected to it. The WeFi service is currently still in its private beta, which will be made public Wednesday. Well, this service is definitely good for country such as the states, which have all sorts of free WiFi services. WeFi will be further extended to include Twitter support in the following week. This allows WeFi users to make use of Twitter to nofify their friends about the location and name of the network they’re connected to.

Just a mouse click for blog commenting, One Click Commenting by Clickcomments
Clickcomments buttons! If you have noticed, there are some little cute buttons before the end of each post. That is the new way one-click commenting by Clickcomments that I’ve just integrated on TechChee here. This one-click commenting is the service provided by Postreach. Once you have got it incorporated with your blog, then it’ll then present you with several buttons as shown above. Which all these buttons represent various user-responses, such as insightful, entertaining and great find etc. This is one of the quickest way for your readers to comment on your blog, which there is only a need for a mouse click. But one thing is the comment buttons relate all to positive comments, leaving no choice for the readers to leave a negative comment. The posts that have received comments are then listed on the Postreach website, which your blog will get the chance to get traffic from Postreach website. More info after the jump!

Google new search results layout?

May 6th, 2007 by ketyung

Google new search results layout?
According to TechCrunch, the info that they’ve gathered from another blog that Google seems to be testing a new layout of their web search result. The search result as shown in the screen attached above, looks nothing too far from the current one, which adds only a left navigation bar that contains the shortcut hyperlinks to other Google apps (such as Images, News, Products etc) for searching of the same searched phrase. Anyway, this looks familiar to me, which I did encounter once before that Google showed similar to the above screenshot. But I can’t recall when and where that I came across it. Anyway, it could be my own confusion with the Google blogsearch, which also shows a sidebar on the left side for sorting of the blog post published date. Anyway, TechCrunch also mentioned that there were similar encounters by some other guys of such a search layout, so there is no big deal here. It looks like Google is pretty shy to show off their new layout.

Digg is down, Digg is in trouble and messed up! Diggers are simply too angry!

May 2nd, 2007 by ketyung

Digg is down!
Digg is down, as shown in the screen captured above. Digg is facing quite a big problem here, it has just shut itself down, dues to tons of posts getting on its front page about the HD-DVD hacked key story. I’ve just come across this story on OhGizmo, and I straight away jumped on Digg, but it was still looking ok, but only having its home page loaded with couple of stories titled with those funny “HEX” code. A few minutes later then I was looking for more information from other news source and got back to Digg again, it simply showed me the above attached screen. So, it’s taken itself down.

Digg messed up!
I didn’t follow much about the Digg story, I think it all happened that someone posted a link to a story about the hacked HD-DVD key. And the post included the title and the description of the cracked code and it managed to get to the frontpage due to thousands of diggs. According to several news site, Digg was getting a little bit coward and trying to bring the post down and also banned that user, as they didn’t wanna get sued by MPAA, as outlined in this blog post by CEO of Digg, Jay Adelson. And this resulted a massive revolt by the users on Digg. Users simply post tons of variances of the story about the cracked HD DVD AACS decryption key on Digg, till out of Digg’s control. Diggers simply think that Digg must be democratic enough to let Diggers’ post to get to its frontpage without censorship, as long as long as there’s no foul play to hit the front page. It was really a kind of massive attack to Digg, as Digg staff were trying to tackle and take those related posts down, but it’ll then flooded again with tons of the variances with thousands of votes (diggs) somemore. It’s really a big mess now, I just got back again to check out Digg, it’s got back to working, as shown in the picture above. But all in mess, loaded with those funny links that full of hex code, or posts titled with full of anger and complaints such as FCK DIGG, STOP DELETING POSTS & RESETING DIGGS, wiki has protection anger vs. 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88, Tonight We Dine in Hell (PIC), Even the Church Doesn’t Like the MPAA! etc… That is simply the riot of the Diggers against the Digg’s unfair censorship.

Integration with Digg for TechChee is in my wish list!

April 20th, 2007 by ketyung

DIGG API !
Digg has officially released its public API (Application Programming Interface). Which means we can create web pages to interact with Digg programmatically. The API is available free of charge for everyone. Similar to other web 2.0 or web service API, the API accepts REST requests and will return Digg data in the form of either XML or JSON or Javascript or serialized PHP, which can be easily parsed and integrated into an web site or application. Other than this it also offers as a PHP PEAR module.

As I have the intention to expand TechChee along the way, one of the options will be looking into what Digg API can help to turn TechChee into a stickier and more useful sites other than just a blog.

Anyway, according to TechCrunch, Digg is having a massive party tonight in San Francisco to celebrate their one million registered user milestone and they are now at 1.2 million registered users.

TechChee.com now with new look and feel, feel free to comment

April 19th, 2007 by ketyung

TechChee loaded with new 3 column theme template!
Hi guys, I’ve just switched TechChee loaded with a new 3-column template. So what do you think? The older 2 column template better or this one better. Feel free to drop me some comments here. Anyway, I like this 3 column template better as I’m the one who designed it with the help for a professional logo by a friend. Furthermore,a 3-column template makes it easier for me to expand TechChee along the way. If you are simply too forgetful, the old TechChee screenshot is attached as follows:
