The Samsung Galaxy S III has been officially announced. The new specs at a quick read are new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Cortex-A9 quad-core chips, a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 (306ppi) resolution, an 8MP rear camera with full HD (1080p) video recording, a 1.9MP front-facing camera with 720p HD video recording and more after the jump.

The Samsung Galasy S3 also packs 1GB of RAM, is offered in models with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB on-board storage; with each supporting microSD card up to 64GB. There are models for LTE connectivity for certain countries while in the UK gets only the HDPA+ model.

The handset also packs 7 sensors which are accelerometer, RGB light, proximity sensor, gryoscope, NFC, and barometer. The entire handset measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, weighs 133 grams and is given a larger battery of 2,100 mAH – the first of its kind among Samsung smartphones.

As the title says Android 4.0 tweaks, there are actually about 8 of them :

  • Smart Stay uses the front camera to ensure that your eyes are focused on the phone and alerts you by dimming the phone screen if they’re not.
  • Direct Call – a feature that automatically calls a contact which you have the message or contact details open while bringing the phone to your ear, thanks to the sensors.
  • Smart Alert will make the phone vibrate and flash an LED when you have a missed call.
  • S-Voice seems to be a copycat of Apple Siri allowing you to enquire about the weather and voice command the phone to carry out certain tasks such as taking picture, controlling music and locking the phone.
  • Social Tag is based on facial recognition linking friends in your photo gallery to your Facebook and Google+ accounts.
  • S Beam pairs with your S3 via NFC and shares photos, videos and more via WiFi.
  • AllShare Cast mirrors whatever on your S3 to a tablet, laptop or TV via WiFi and your S3 can be a game controller for the gameplay on any of the mentioned.
  • PopUp Play pops a small thumbnail of video up and lets you continue to watch while at the same time doing other functions such as surfing web on your S3.

While compared to the Galaxy S2, S3’s display is 22-percent larger, the 8.6mm thickness is slightly thicker than the 8.49mm S2 but of course S3 is powered by a much more powerful quad-core chip. Head over to Gizmodo for more details and images.
