The iOS 5 was just announced yesterday, the beta version and SDK were also released yesterday. But now it’s been jailbroken by the iPhone Dev Team.
The jailbreak was done on an iPod Touch running the iOS 5 beta release. Proof is shown on the screenshots above, showing Cydia and iSSH icons on the homescreen.
It’s a tethered jailbreak using limera1n, which aims at a boot rom exploit. And such a boot rom exploit on iPod Touch is what cannot be fixed by Apple through firmware alone. Larger screenshots of the jailbreak available on @Musclenerd
