RFID tags have been used to track herds of animals, people and various items in life or in manufacturing sectors. But now these RFID tags have been extended to be used inside human body i.e. to track how food travels from your mouth down to your digestive system.
Of course, these RFID tags are edible and their use will provide you answer of the link between of our diet and overall health. These digestable RFID tags come in super tiny size, which could automate the entire process for food that we consume.
There are no electronics or batteries carried by the edible RFID tags, they’re simply small antennas, which can be read by an RFID reader by simply transmitting passively a simple code as an identifier to the reader.
The tags are simple and cheap to make as well. They will eventually break down into a tiny amount of silver (the amount that’s less than what’s found in tap water), while they’ve been melted down by your digestive system.
These edible RFID tags are actually just a proposed concept called NutriSmart, suggesting that having RFID embedded in food is useful to track nutrition and food allergies. There is also possibility to have your smartphone as an RFID reader, so you can track and be aware of that you should eat more gently or slowly to stay healthier.
