The encryption on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch can be decrypted, as there is a commercial decryption toolset for iOS which has been announced by ElcomSoft, a Russian company.
The Elcomsoft’s decryption toolset consists of two parts, a password breaker and another part that is only available to police, law enforcement and forensic agencies.
The second part is able to extract the numbers used to create the encryption keys for iOS that are used to render decrypted images of the devices. The decryption tool needs to have direct access to the device in order to capture the unique device key (UID) and escrow keys, which are calculated using the UID and escrow pairing records.
Since the second part is not easily available for the public, it should pose no threat to all of us. The only worry is the first part – the password breaker. But as long as you use a complex password instead of the 4-digit code, then your iDevice will be safe from the password breaker. As it uses brute force method to guess password based on variations of a word.
