Japanese have high dependency on robots. Now, they have a better idea, which combines a mini humanoid, telepresence robot and a cell phone into a single device called the Elfoid. The Elfoid was developed by Japan’s Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR), which aims to make communication more intimate and personal.

The Elfoid robot phone measures 20cm in length. It is equipped with a number of control buttons that hide behind its skin, and a camera that is responsible to capture the emotions on your face and your head’s movements.
Information is replicated over in real time when two persons are talking; it transmits your voice as well as your “feelings”. ATR hopes to make a commercial version ready within 5 years. It’ll also be working a more interactive Elfoid phone, by equipping it with a range of motors, sensors and other bells and whistles, which will boost the level of realism. A clip is included below showing how it works.
