Kyocera Echo dual-screen smartphone coming to Sprint US in Spring

Kyocera Echo is a dual-screen smartphone that lets you see more than what a regular smartphone does. The dual screens of the Kyocera Echo fit what most people want – larger screen area for comfortably viewing any multimedia contents but without sacrificing the size, which still comfortably fits in your pocket.

The Kyocera Echo is a smartphone with multi-tasking capabilities and it can be folded up into a single-screen device through the use of a patent-pending “pivot hinge”.

While opened the Kyocera Echo offers two 3.5-inch screens with 480 x 800 (WVGA) resolution which can be operated independently, side by side or combined to form a large 4.7-inch display. The dual-screen phone runs Android 2.2 and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor that copes with the multi-tasking needs.

The little downside of the phone’s multi-tasking capability called “Simul-Task Mode”, is it’s only limited to the 7-core apps that have been optimized for the Echo’s dual screens. These apps include messaging, email, web browsing, phone, gallery, contacts and VueQue – pre-loaded app for viewing YouTube videos.

The Kyocera Echo also lets you interestingly run apps on its two screens, such as mix and match apps to have one running on one screen and another on the second screen. There will be an SDK released for the developers before the dual-screen phone launches, so they can develop apps to suit the phone’s dual-screen capabilities.

There is also Optimized mode letting a single app be on dual-screen use, such as email is shown on the on the top screen while touchscreen QWERTY keyboard is displayed on the bottom screen. The Tablet mode is what letting you combine two screens into a large 4.7-inch screen.

Other goodies are WiFi, WiFi hotspot capability, 3G, 5MP camera with flash, 720p HD video recording, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, 1GB on-board memory, and an included 8GB microSD card and support up to 32GB. The Kyocera Echo will be coming to US in Spring exclusively through for $199 with 2-year contract.
