HighPoint launches Smart Hybrid PCIe 6Gbps SATA SSDs, offering both speeds and capacities

SSDs have been expected to replace hard disk drives. But due to the high prices, SSDs are still far less common while compared to hard disk drives and users can usually afford SSDs with relatively smaller storage capacities. Luckily, some manufacturers have put in efforts looking into developing SSDs that are less costly, such as the PCIe-based SSD introduced by FusionIO before. And now HighPoint has also joined the same bandwagon, having created PCIe-based SSD products called the Smart Hybrid HBA.

The HighPoint’s Smart Hybrid HBA SSD is based on the Marvell’s HyperDuo technology, which comes in the form of a single PCI-e 2.0 / SATA 6Gbps card, offering a single, compact SSD on a PCI-e card solution.

The HighPoint’s Smart Hybrid SSD combines the performance of an SSD and the cost effective, high capacity of a SATA HDD, into one single storage device known as a HyperDuo virtual drive, that makes it suitable for performance hungry workstations and applications.

There are two models of the HighPoint’s RocketHybrid HBA available, which are the RocketHybrid 1220 and 1222, all based on SATA 6Gbps PCI-E 2.0 interface. The RocketHybrid 1220 provides two internal SATA ports for standard PCs, while the RocketHybrid 1222 provides two eSATA ports for use with external disk enclosures. Both models will be available in February 2011 worldwide through HighPoint’s distributors, retailers and solution providers, but no words about their prices.
