Samsung announces self-encrypted SSD to maximize data protection

Samsung has announced its new solid state drive with hardware encryption technology to provide highest protection for you data. The new Samsung’s SSD employs the Goverment-Grade AES 256-bit Encryption to safeguard your files. The hardware encryption of the Samsung SSD is always on, which has the user authentication to be performed in the high security of the drive controller, instead of in the software.

The 256-bit AES encryption of the new Samsung’s SSD has been certified with FIPS 140-2, a set of the cryptography requirements issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Other than the security concern, hardware encryption is also much better in performance, compared to software encryption. The following graph (Done by Trusted Strategies) shows you that hardware or self-encrypting SSD is about 2.4 times and 3.7 times better in performance than a software-encrypted SSD and software-encrypted HDD respectively.
