Cisco has announced its Cisco umi telepresence, which is a technology that allows HD video calls through your existing HD television. Video calls can be made through your HDTV as long as you have broadband connection hooked up.
The Cisco’s solution allows you to chat over your existing HD TV set in high resolution without the lagging frame rate issues that have been experienced with many webcams and video conferencing systems.
Basically the Cisco’s solution should match a number of newly released HD TV sets on the market, such as the Panasonic’s VIERA TVs which come with built-in webcam and Skype function, allow you to video chat with your loved ones over big TV screens.
There should be more such video conferencing functionality to be included in upcoming TV products since the Skype and broadband Internet connections are widely available these days. Watch the clip below for the Cisco Umi in action.
