A Swiss-based lab EPFL has started a project known as SMAVNET (Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Network), which aims to make use of some flying robots to create ad hoc WiFi networks, which will come in useful as channels of communications during emergency or an aftermath of a natural disaster.
The flying robots have been designed like boomerang shaped miniature planes, which need to be thrown to be launched. These flying robots seem to be equipped with solar panels in order to keep them flying in the sky. They could also be bouncing WiFi signals from one to another to maintain a strong WiFi signal strength.
As mentioned, these flying bots will come in handy for creating ad hoc WiFi network during emergency. Such as while you’re trapped in a remote area, you can fly a number of the WiFi bots which you can then use your mobile phone or computer to communicate with the outside world via WiFi. A video clip is included below to give you an idea on how the WiFi flying bots work.
