If you’re a long talker on mobile phone you’ll definitely love to hear the good news that the Korean scientists have brought to us. They’ve found a way to generate electricity from sound waves, which means the mobile phone will never run flat on its battery, as long as the handset is able to convert sounds into electricity to power itself.
The magic behind this technology is scientists have managed to make some kind of piezoelectric material that can covert sound waves into electricity. The concept should sound similar to why speakers can transform electricity to sound – but the said technology now does the other way round by converting sounds back to electricity.
The main ingredient of the material comes from calamine lotion, zinc oxide. Using the material, scientists created a field of nanowires that was held between two electrodes. And while it’s blasted with sound waves, the material will be able to produce a current of 5 milivolts. Although these are very small voltages which are sufficient to power a mobile phone, but over times, scientists will be able to improve or pack more materials, making them possible to power up a phone and let you continue your conversation till your brain burns.
