Ford Focus electric vehicles to come with liquid-cooled battery systems

The lithium-ion battery systems used in electric vehicles will need special cooling system in order to maintain their performance, reliability and durability. Ford plans to use lithium-ion batteries in their new batches of EVs. But in order to keep the battery systems at good performance, reliable and durable at extreme temperature, Ford has a better way to do that i.e. to use cooled or heated liquid to regulate the battery temperature, which should extend the battery life and maximize driving range.

The new battery cooling system should appear on all the new Ford Focus Electric which will debut later in the US this year. The lithium-ion batteries used in these new EVs will be more sophisticated, which use an active liquid system that heats or chills a coolant before pumping it through the battery cool system. This helps regulate the temperature against external conditions.

The battery cooling system will play its parts on both cold days and hot days by cooling down and warming up the battery. Thus, the system is able to provide sufficient discharge power for expected vehicle performance. So, the mentioned Ford Focus EVs that will release in US later this year or in 2010 in Europe, will come equipped with the said liquid-cooled battery systems. Ford will also have some other EVs coming their ways including the Ford Transit Connect Electric small commercial van and some hybrids.
