GMail has been added with a new feature which allows you to make phone calls within your GMail to a physical phone. The service is free for now for calls made within the US and Canada. And within the first 24 hours after the service has been launched, Google has confirmed (via its Twitter account) that over 1 million phone calls have been made through the GMail phone service.

GMail has a user base over 175 millions of user accounts. Of course, the massive figure recorded will likely be due to curiosity – many will want to try out what the new phone call service of the GMail is all about.

As mentioned phone calls placed through GMail is free within the US and Canada. However, you’ll be charged 2 cent per minute for making calls to other countries such as UK, France, Germany, Argentina, China, and Japan. The fees are subject to change in the future but it’ll remain as its current rate till the end of this year. So, have you tried placing a call via GMail? Currently, GMail is reportedly doing just fine with no network congestions with those many calls placed through it.
