Consumer Reports have carried out their own test for the iPhone 4 reception issue. And they’ve found that it’s a hardware defect instead of faulty software as what Apple claims. The test involved three iPhone 4s purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area and they used a base-station emulator to simulate carrier cell towers.
The same method was used to test iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre, but none of the phones had the signal loss problem of the iPhone 4. They’ve also found a very affordable solution if shelling out extra bucks for an iPhone 4 case isn’t your choice i.e. you just need a piece of duct tape to cover the antenna gap but this will make your iPhone 4 look ugly! So, in their conclusion, they do not recommend the iPhone 4! Watch the clip below that shows the test.
