Most servers will come with a quite number of processors. You might have heard some used in the corporates having 64 processors. But a server that has more than 500 processors is probably the first of its kind.
The SM1000 server that has been unveiled by CA based SeaMicro is a server that comes in 10U form factor and packs 512 Intel Atom processors. Intel Atom processors are most commonly used in netbooks or notebooks and known to consume comparatively lower power. Therefore, the SeaMicro server is actually to offer up an alternative to those power-hungry servers. And it’s expected to consume less power and take up less space by up to 75%.
Apart from the 512 CPUs, the SM1000 server also offers high-speed Ethernet connections including 1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. The servers will also ship with load balancing and server management software which are useful tools for server deployment. It’s good choice using the Intel Atom processors for the SeaMicro server lines, since the Atom chips have an efficiency rate 3.2 times greater than x86 processors.
