Hitachi-LG Data Storage has announnced a new product called the HyDrive, which comes in the form of a combo of an optical drive and SSD. The HyDrive is the first of its type and is planned to be shipped sometime around August 2010.
HyDrive is useful for notebook or netbook that is so compact, has no extra room to slot in a storage drive or optical drive. With the HyDrive you can enjoy the benefit of both the optical drive and solid state drive.
The first generation of HyDrive will be available with 32GB and 64GB of storage. A version with 256GB of SSD will be coming sometime next year.
The HyDrive’s optical drive is able to read your CDs, DVDs like regular optical drives. While the SSD inside the HyDrive stores your data. Apparently, the HyDrive allows the netbook and notebook designers to use the space traditionally used for storage for other needs, to produce netbooks or notebooks with much smaller form factors.
The first generation of HyDrive is expected to be seen on Asus EeeTop nettops and will also be globally used inside the Asus N61DA notebook.
