LaCie has shown us a number of rugged external hard drives and they’ve added a new rugged drive to its line, which provides both protections from physical damage and unintended access of data on the drive.
The new LaCie rugged external hard drive comes with built-in biometric fingerprint scanner, which allows the own to unlock the data for access using their fingerprint. The data on the drive are being strongly encrypted, which will only be decrypted while a right finger swipes through its fingerprint reader.
The LaCie drive employs 128-bit AES hardware based encryption to keep the data securely encrypted. On the physical side, the drive uses military grade shock proof enclosure to allow the data to survive through beating or dropping.
The LaCie drive is USB or FireWire powered, it can connect to both a PC and Mac. The hard drive inside the case is also mounted on four independent shocks and with a rubber bumper surrounding it, to protect it well from shocks and knocks. It’ll be available in two storage capacities, 500GB and 1TB and start at a price of £169 or $246 USD.
