EyePhone – eye-tracking mobile phone

While you’re tired of using your fingers to operate the phone on its touchscreen, you’d probably prefer another method, such as moving your eyes to tell the phone what to do. EyePhone, an eye-tracking mobile phone that allows the movements of your eyes to operate it, seems not to be too far from reality.

The EyePhone basically uses a software that has been developed by a team of researchers at Dartmouth College, to allow modern smart phones to be controlled by the eyes of the users. There would be a number advantages using the eyes to control the phone such as you’d not transfer smudges from your hands to the phone screen anymore and you could always keep eyes exercising that would help improve your vision.

The EyePhone software has been tested on a Nokia 810 smartphone which uses the front-facing camera to take constant video stream of the user’s face and analyze the user’s eye location. The software is able to track exactly what section on the screen the user’s actually looking at.

Normal operations on the phone interface such as highlighting the icons and menus, launching a program or choosing a contact to make calls all done by simple actions of the eyes. Everything sounds nice but there are still some improvements need to be done by the team. And it’ll be a while before the technology finds its way to mobile phones.
