Apple has filed an application patent of a head-mounted display which Apple is currently developing and the goggles are most likely to be used with the iPhone 4G for viewing 3D contents.

As shown in the picture, the head-mounted display is to have a portable electronic device (e.g. iPhone 4G) to be slotted into it, which makes the device placed right in front of the eyes. The head-mounted display seems to be similar to those video glasses, which have already been in the market. But this head-mounted display will offer more as it’ll come equipped with a microphone, speaker, a camera, on-board batteries, and an accelerometer that allows the display to detect your head movements, which can then be translated into commands to operate the display system.

It seems like the head-mounted display will be able to handle auto switching between one format of content to the other. Are they talking about auto 2D to 3D switching? Anyway, just leave it to Apple. You can read more about the application here
