3D printer recreates failing human organs by printing them in 3D

Bio 3d printer prints human vein

These days, we watch 3D HDTV, play games in 3D and the researchers at University of Missouri claim that they’ll be able to print human organs in 3D and recreate those failing human organs. Such as if your liver was failing, the 3D printer could use the cells extracted from your liver to print a healthy one.

This definitely sounds like science fiction but it still has a long way off. Currently, what the researchers have done is having recreated a human vein using bio-ink, which was created using human cells and printed on bio-paper than formed the shape of the human vein.

The 3D printer is called Organovo NovoGen printer, was created by Gabor Forgacs. They’ll further develop the system to make it capable of printing larger organs such as liver, heart etc. Printing of the human organs will base on blueprints or schemes of organs created using X-ray technology. According to Forgacs, the technology would allow human testing in 5 years’ time.
