The scary-looking robot shown here is a simulator for a 1-year-old boy. This little bot is called Diego-san, developed by Machine Perception Lab in a collaboration with Japanese Kokoro. The little bot was designed to help scientists to understand more how children develop motor skills and learn gestural communication.
The Diego-san little bot is apparently larger than a typical 1-year-old boy. The head itself already encloses 20 moving parts, which allow it to produce facial expressions. The eyes are made of high-resolution cameras which record what it sees in the surrounding.
It’s also capable of speech, thanks to the built-in speaker. And with the 6-axis accelerometers in the ears to let it detect orientation and movement. Other capabilities include picking up objects and standing up from a seated position. It now wears a prototyped face, and some more work ahead for the developers to get it complete.
