Handheld device to detect early vision problem in children

Retinal mapping device to early kids' vision loss
A handheld device has been developed by the engineers of Duke University, which can detect any early vision problem or vision loss that is commonly caused by ROP (Retinopathy of prematurity) in children.

The handheld device will help improve ROP diagnosis and treatment. The device makes use of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) to let engineers capture 3D images of the back of the eye, which is the more effective way of identifying eye conditions in infants.

The SD OCT allows the creation of a 3D high-res map which provides very detailed view of the retina’s layer. Besides providing absolutely good details, it’s also able to produce the details 40 times much faster than the conventional method using ophthalmoscope.

The researchers hope by using the detailed images of the infant’s eyes, they will be able to predict how the infants’ disease and vision will be in the future.
