The life and job of an astronaut in the space ship or station are not easy at all. It seems like they have lots of knobs, dials and buttons to flip and monitor (You must ask an astronaut in order to know more how the situation is normally like when flying a spaceship. It’s definitely not as easy as seen in the sci-fi movie.).
Anyway, in order to ease the astronauts’ jobs, the European Space Agency (ESA) has created a wearable augmented reality system (or WEAR in short), which is specially designed to be used in the ISS (International Space Station). The WEAR is able to overlay the names, purposes and instructions for items in the ISS, allowing hands-free and voice activation of those items in the space station.
The WEAR can project the instructions for any given task right onto their real-life objects which greatly simplifies an astronaut’s job. The system has an inventory of all the viewing angles in the spaceship. The WEAR device has a camera on top, which captures what the astronaut looks at and then maps to the 3D map of the spaceship.
The device has been tested in the IIS, where an astronaut used it to change an air filter and shown positive results. There are many other applications such as firefighters should be the next suitable category of user.
