Barcodes have been used for decades for tagging items in the industry. RFID could be the better alternative in the digital age, as it’s readable by today’s gadgets such as cellphone but they’re much more costly to implement.
Now, MIT researchers have found a new item-tagging technology, called the Bokodes, which can be read by a cellphone’s camera from an angle and at a distance and they can display a wide variety of information. An example of application of the Bokodes is tagging library books with Bokodes. So customer could then type the title he wanted to look for on the cellphone, take a picture of the aisle and the photo would then mark the position of the book in the aisle.
Bokode comes in the form of an LED covered by a mask or lens, each costs $5 which is still expensive to implement. But MIT claims that new versions are being designed, which could cost as little as 5 cents a piece. Anyway, there are still a few years to go for the Bokode technology to become mature and popular.
