Netbooks normally lack the graphical processing and HD video playback capabilities found on desktops or powerful laptops. Terracode, in their project, has made it possible on the Acer Aspire One netbook to handle up to 1080p HD content.
The Aspire One netbook that has been modified by Terracode, will come with a Broadcom BCM70012 video accelerator, in the form of a PCI-e card, making the netbook capable of handling up to 1080p full HD resolutions. On this Broadcom PCI-e video card is where the Intel GMA 950 graphics chip is and it takes the strain off the internal CPU of the netbook.
Other than adding a PCI-e video accelerator, they have also slotted in a 64GB SSD and added an extra 1GB of RAM. The entire project for making this powerful netbook is $442, which is still two dollars cheaper than the HP’s Mini 110 XP that also comes with the same Broadcom video card but with more storage and RAM. The two videos below show the difference between the Acer netbook with and without the Broadcom video card.
