Although many of today’s mobile phones come with HD-quality displays but very few of them are capable of recording and playing back high-def content at a respectable frame rate. Renesas, has now announced a new processor, SH7370, which can be incorporated into mobile phones to provide them capabilities of both recording and playback of full HD video (1,920 x 1,080 pixels).
This processor is claimed to be the first of its kind in the industry. It supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard (H.264) at Full HD video resolution with a recording/playback frame rate of 30fps. The chip measures 1cm square only. Despite the tiny size, the chip is capable of 1080p H.264 video decoding and encoding along with on-chip Dolby Digital 5.1-channel output. The company has started shipping the first units of these chips to manufacturers.
