NASA has developed a new electronic nose, which its initial purpose is to monitor the air quality on Space Shuttle Endeavour and the International Space Station. But scientists have found that it can also be used to differentiate healthy and cancerous cells in human brain.
The NASA e-nose is able to detect contaminants within about one to 10,000 parts per million. With this capability, this e-nose is also able to differentiate odor differences between normal and cancerous brain cells. This e-nose will surely add a new chapter into the medical field. It’s now attracted a number group including Brain Mapping Foundation, City of Hope Cancer Center, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory to start testing this technology.
