Texas Memory Systems have announced their biggest flash SSD, RamSan-620, which has a 5TB storage capacity. As shown in the picture, this storage comes in a 2U rack-mounted form factor.
The RamSan-620 uses a single level cell (SLC) SSD, which is claimed as the highest capacity single-level-cell SSD found in the market. This storage device gives an impressive throughput of 3GB per second and latency 80 microseconds for writes.
Texas claims that to achieve similar performance using hard disk drives, you’ll need 500 of them that would occupy 36 disk enclosures and require three racks to house them. And such a setup will consume up to 7,000 watts and cost over half a million. Whereas the RamSan-620 consumes only 325 watts and is about 60 times less expensive.
The RamSan-620 is best for use in SAN (Storage Area Network) environment. It can support 2 to 8 Fibre Channel or InfiniBand ports. Or can be integrated into mixed storage infra and manageable via a common management framework. The Texas RamSan-620 SSD storage device is available now but the price has not been released yet.
