If you’ve got a new MacBook, you will have no way to hook it up to an external HDMI-based display. As Apple hasn’t yet released an official adapter that allows you to connect your MacBook to an external HDMI display.
Fortunately, we have MonoPrice, who has just unveiled their Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter and the most exciting is it’s priced as little as $14.25. Other than the HDMI adapter for your MacBook, MonoPrice has also made some other adapters available, which come in handy when you wanna hook up a non-HDMI based display to your MacBook.
They have the Mini Display Port to DVI adapter and Mini DisplayPort to VGA for only $15.20 and $18.85 respectively. Apple has also got their own versions of the last two adapters but they come with a more expensive price tag that costs $29 each.

I tried this adapter for my mid-2010 MacBookPro, but this one will NOT support the audio over HDMI. Weeks later, Monoprice updated their site to say the same. This is cheap and effective for video, but go with the Moshi adapter if you want audio/video in one cable.
The MacbookPro before April 2010 does not support audio over mini displayport, so this Monoprice one is fine.
