Femtocell is a small device that takes the indoor cellphone signals and routes them across the Internet to give you better reception when the cellphone is used indoor. Or you can say it’s a cellular network extender that makes use of Internet to boost the indoor cellular signals.
Airvana has announced their new HubBub CDMA Femtocell, which is slightly different from other femtocells in the market as it emphasizes on its broadband speeds and indoor connectivity rather than the voice call quality. The company claims that studies have shown only 36% of voice calls with mobile phones happen indoor, whereas there is about 46% of data usage happens indoor, therefore the company puts more focus on improving its data speed.
The Airvana HubBub Femtocell is able to provide data speeds indoors of up to 3.1 Mbps and it’s been tested in a variety of different homes that you can get at least 2Mbps in the entire house. These speeds are much higher than the current 3G network can provide.
