Here comes the good news for long-term stroke sufferers who have lost their mobility and stayed in a bed/wheelchair for several years. University of California at Irvine has carried a study of using robot-assisted therapy to help stroke victims to regain their mobility.
The study was done on 15 patients who have an average age of 61 years old, and all of them have suffered a stroke for at least 10 years. The robot-assisted therapy used a robotic arm to help them grip and gesture.
The robot-assisted therapy also helps them get their hand back into positions needed to perform
tasks, getting the appropriate muscles to reconnect to the brain, so their hands will be operable by the hand to perform daily tasks. The patients have shown some improvement after a few months of the therapy and some patients showed rapid gain of mobility.
