A new breast cancer detection technology has surfaced, called Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), which has been tested to yield better result in early detection of breast cancer.

The BSGI technology is said to work more effectively and be potential to replace the traditional breast CA detection technologies such as mammography, MRI and sonography. This BSGI technology is now being commercialized by Dilon Technologies. The BSGI technology uses an injection of a pharmaceutical tracing agent into the human body, which emits gamma radiation after it’s fully taken up by all cells of the body.

The BSGI is to detect the increase of metabolic activity of cancerous cells compared to surrounding tissues, and this method is independent of tissue density which is more effectively to detect cancer at early stage. The company hopes that the BSGI technology will one day become a standard adjunctive molecular breast imaging technique to mammography.

Dilion has carried out the test for detecting small tumors within breasts and the result showed that it’s more promising than the other three technologies. Test has been carried out on 26 women ranging in age 46 to 82. The result is Mammograms had a sensitivity of 79%, sonography gave a sensitivity of 68%, MRI had 83%, and the BSGI was the highest, giving a sensitivity of 93%. So, BSGI is the more promising technique, which should be used in the near future to evaluate patients with suspected cancer.
