It seems pretty easy to get your iPhone 3G unlocked and be SIM-independent, which you can then use any SIM card on it and get it attached to any network operators. The iPhone Dev team has produced the yellowsn0w app, which is meant for unlocking the iPhone 3G.
The yellowsn0w app is now in its beta 0.91 release. It’s just about a couple of steps that involve jailbreaking your iPhone 3G using Quickpwn, updating your iPhone with latest firmware and installing the yellowsn0w unlock app. Then turn off the iPhone and plug in a 3rd party SIM for a try. Cruchgear has the step-by-step instructions, but it seems isn’t as easy as it sounds, you’ll have problem to get it working if you’re out of luck.
